Mobile World Congress.
You'd be forgiven for not knowing that MWC was happening in Barcelona this week. It's basically the biggest mobile telephony event of the year where manufacturers, networks and third party vendors all come together and show their wares. You'll have heard that the Samsung Galaxy S7 has been launched. Well that's where it happened. So my point is, if you're a bit of a gadget freak, you should keep an eye on it as there is always a load of new phones and toys that work with your phone launched at it.
So we spoke about the Snapchat/Nielsen deal a while back and some more details are beginning to come out. Nielsen are going to provide analytics for campaigns. So now you'll be able to justify budgets. Nice
From MWC. Mastercard are going to launch selfie authentication for online shoppers. While it will only be in 14 markets to start off with, barring any major issues we can expect this to roll out worldwide.
So PPC/Adwords are a big part of your marketing strategy huh? Then read on. Google are getting rid of the right hand side ads. Creating less real estate for ads and therefore making it more expensive probably.
If you like coffee and use a machine that uses pods - like a Nespresso - you should read this. And then you should go home and get rid of it. This is the dark side of coffee pods. The side that you really never thought about.
Those guys in Stripe are pretty smart. And having identified one of the major barriers to people setting up an internet business they've created a solution. And called it Atlas. And it's majestic in its simplicity.
This week's covetable item is a 3D printer from Polaroid (or rather the company that owns the name) that is targeted at the home market. There's no price yet, but it'll print things in 3D so I definitely want one!
Last week it was Facebook Instant Articles, this week it's Google Accelerated Mobile Pages. Basically they're both trying to speed up your mobile internet experience. This is not a bad thing.
Twitter has become a vital tool in many brands Customer Service armoury and this week they've made it stronger. If you're using Twitter in this way you should definitely be checking these features out.
The big things to take away from MWC are the Galaxy S7 Range and the fact that by the middle of the year, pretty much everyone is going to be making a 360 degree camera of some sort. I've gone on the record as saying that I don't think VR will explode this year, and I may yet be proven wrong, and if I am then MWC was the first blow to my beliefs.
